COLLATERAL BEAUTY

By Saakshi Sharma

Collateral Beauty is an American-drama film released in 2016 starring Will Smith, Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Peña and many more.

Though it was released almost four years back, it holds a very important message. It is a masterpiece that shows how beautiful grief could be.

It’s an emotionally heavy film that is based on the whole motto of connecting love, time and death.

The movie says these are the three basic elements that connect all the human beings to each other around the world as we long for love, wish we had more time and fear death.

The story starts with a grieving Will Smith, who has recently lost his child, writing letters to the universe, demanding answers from the cosmos to explain why he had to suffer through such an unbearable tragedy. As his friends and colleagues see him wasting his life away while dealing with their own problems, they plot a plan in order to deem him unfit in front of the board members to gain control of the company which they all started together.

Unaware of the plans universe has for them, while trying to pull their friend out of his misery, they heal themselves along the way too.

This movie beautifully portrays that there’s no timeline to get over the grief someone you loved so deeply but time does eventually heal all and even the most hideous of the circumstances have their own collateral beauty!

Mother’s Day Special

By Srishti Bansal

Happy Mother’s Day to all the gorgeous mothers out there.
Today I am just going express what I feel about a mother’s love. A mother is a walking miracle , her love is magical which I think no poet or artist could ever portray it or describe it through paintings and poems. Her love is so pure and selfless, that sometimes I wonder that how can someone be so benevolent and self-sacrifising, its just beyond my imagination. In these 19 years of my life, I have learnt one thing for sure that no one will have your back forever except your mother. She will be standing right beside you in every phase of your life and without expecting anything in return. A mother and a child are connected through a umbilical cord at first but then, connected through hearts for life. A mother is the only person who will love you deeply and unconditionally till her last breath.
So, on this Mother’s Day I watched a wonderful movie wth my mother and its name is “ROOM” it is old movie which was released in 2015 but is recently available on online streaming platforms. It is directed by Tommy Wiseau. The movie is based on a girl who gets kidnapped, confined to a tiny room and raped and after 2 years she gives birth to baby boy, who becomes her light of hope to get out of this hellhole. The movie is so beautiful that it just wrenched my heart. Me and my mother both cried atleast twice/thrice while watching it.
The movie also conveys this message that a mother will not even think twice for putting her life in danger, in order to save her child’s life. In the movie the child’s name is Jack, who is unaware of the fact that there is a big world outside the tiny room in which they live. The kidnapper never used to take them out and has locked the door using password protection so that there is no chance they could escape out. The movie is a absolute masterpeice and one of the most underappreciated films of modern era. The character writing is outstanding and every line feels genuine and carries a emotional weight. The story is so suspenseful that it will give you rapid heart beats. The movie has got 4.6 ratings out of 5 and even I feel that this movie is worth watching on this special day.

In This Corner Of The World

By Yati Hankar

Now that the world is on hold. Days feels longer and boredom stretches out to this extend that you’ve binged watched almost every latest series and movies and dramas and what not! So like any of you, I started piecing my life with throwbacks and again stumble upon this not so forgotten master piece of 2016.

IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD.

It is a Japanese animated war time film directed by Sunao Katabuchi. The film is a brief piece of world war 2, based on the manga written by Fumiyo Kono.

It circles around the life of a young woman named Suzu, who is very dreamy and naive who loves to draw. She along with her parents and siblings stays in a small town of Hiroshima called Eba. In 1943, Suzu being an 18 year old was arranged to be married to an unknown man named Shusaku, the movie leaves out the deal of ideologies and politics during the war thus the story is solely based on suzu’s prespective. A young common girl. Suzu’s husband turned out to be  a very kind man who comes from Kure city, 15 miles away from Hiroshima. the story gradually unfolds the daily life of common people  during the war and how they manage to cope up with it or manage to survive it also shows how suzu lives like a regular Japanese house wife in her husband’s house.

The movie also highlights the food shortage struggle and how Japanese people built caves to survive bombs. The turn of events during the war led suzu to lose her right hand and her niece Harumi. Despite all the tragedies Suzu faced, she managed to outgrow it but when a big blast in Hiroshima occurred killing many, the emperor of Japan announces the end of war by declaring surrender to allied powers which leaves Suzu in despair remembering her loses. |

This was just a bit of the movie; you can watch it on Netflix. Where I am very fond of Animes which provide a taste of common life, this movie will not disappoint you but will give you a warm nostalgic feeling and has a deep meaning in it. But at the same time it’s not preachy and shallow. And so simply put, in this corner of the world is a delight watch.

IKIGAI: The Japanese Secret to a long and happy Life

By Yati Hankar

Authored BY:  HECTOR GARCIA and FRANCESC MIRALLES

As intriguing the title sounds and as pretty the book looks, I present you a book you can definitely judge by it’s cover.

During a lazy time like this, following the same eat-sleep routine where purpose of life might seem a little hazy now, here is a Japanese mantra to get you an answer to your never ending “i don’t know what to do with my life” frustration.

This book is based on a Japanese concept of living life that is IKIGAI which means ‘the happiness of always being busy.’ It is made from two Japanese words: ‘IKI’ meaning life and ‘KAI’ meaning the realization of hope and expectation and if simply put ‘a reason to jump out of bed each morning.’

The book comprises pieces about longevity and study of Okinawa island of Japan where maximum centenarians, 24.55 out of every 100, are found. What do they eat, drink, how do they exercise, how do they manage stress, how living in close community and social ties and relationship is having an impact on their well being and longetivity was surveyed.

The good read moments I have shared with this book have felt nothing but self investment. Usually non fiction books are not that interesting for many but this book directs you to find your personal IKIGAI, which means to find something you love, something you’re good at, to manifest something that the world needs.

Once you understand the meaning of IKIGAI, the book tries to explain the art of being young while growing old. Where everything is about finding your meaning of life  the book also encourage the idea of being in flow that is to be completely immerse into the experience so that no other stuff can distract you. It definitely does not  seems very subtle and easy to find your IKIGAI right away  and so their are several tips from the locals of Okinawa about what habits should be encouraged to live a better life.

While concluding the book the author unfolds another Japanese technique called ‘WABI SABI,’ an idea of finding beauty in imperfection, according to this technique Japanese people find imperfection, incomplete and flaws beautiful.

Here flawed is preferred as it resembles to nature. Perceptually, I understood IKIGAI to be a passion which is in everyone, which gives meaning to our life and gives us the inspiration to be our best to the very end of life.

NOTE TO SELF by Connor Franta

By Saakshi Sharma

‘Note to Self’ is a memoir by the YouTube sensation Connor Franta.

Instead of being a black and white word book, it’s full of colored pictures, connecting us with the greater, outer world of the author. It breaks the monotony and adds on to the aesthetic value of the book.

This book revolves around a variety of topics and seems like a little guide for teenagers and young adults. The author tries to make his point by using his own experiences and examples, thus keeping the whole story real instead of using hypothetical examples.

He touches a variety of topics through the book like self love, self acceptance, relationships- both with own self as well as with others. He also deals with some sensitive topics like dealing with depression and body image issues and very subtly reminds us all of the value of kindness.

In a world where everyone is obsessed with perfection and seeks happiness in being accepted in the society, this book teaches us that the only way to attain true happiness is by accepting one’s flaws and being okay with it and being a salad bowl instead of being a soup bowl. At times articles and at other times epiphanies, poems or quotes, this book is a new take on young adult non fiction which is not the norm is modern literature.

By Srishti Bansal

This review is entirely dedicated to technology enthusiast. So if you are also a technophile then keep on scrolling.

So today i will be reviewing Samsung Galaxy earbuds which are currently available and trending in market.

Galaxy earbuds which were launched on 8th March 2019. It is a great pair of wireless earbuds which can be easily attached to your smartphone via bluetooth connectivity. We can listen to music /podcast or can do binge watching all day long by using it. The sound quality offered by these wireless buds is fairly good, indeed , with deep bass and wide open soundstage. These buds use Bluetooth 5.0 which means as soon as you take them out of the case they will automatically get connected to your smartphone which is a great feature.

It has a generic looking earbud case which is very handy and can be easily handgripped without worring about it slipping off the hand. The case has a USB-C port for charging and also, has a feature of wireless charging and if you keep your earbuds in the case they will automatically start charging if required. The case uses one of thise resistant hinges that snaps close. Now as you open the case there is a LED light between the left and the right earbud. The LED light turns green or red according to the status of the earbuds.

The earbuds are universal that means it can be paired up with any brand’s smartphone whether it is Apple, Vivo , Oppo etc. These earbuds also have “Dolby speakers” which helps in experiencing satisfying sound quality. It also includes noise cancellation feature which will help you in eliminating background noise, when you are wearing them.

Overall it is a above average product which has got 4 stars out of 5 which means that it is totally worth the money.

Never have I ever

By Padma Dolma

Well the teenage is a very critical period and most likely to be a period where everything gets intense. This is a story of an Indian – American teenage who struggles not only with her hormonal changes but mental issues as well. The whole thing was paused for a movement when she didn’t grief her father’s death instead she got paralyzed, nothing can explain what happened to her legs not even medical science. When your closest person dies the worst you an expect other than accepting the lost is either you fall in trauma or you face denial and Devi was facing both with her own style, where she didn’t wanna grief her father’s death so she found a distraction for herself without knowing it by paralysing herself. The mind of a human is as powerfull as enough to make you think about such things.

And one day she just started walking as if that’s the most normal thing. She wanted to live her teenage period full with fun which she was unaware of or we can say didn’t get it at all under the parental care of her mother, her mother is quite sensitive about her she tries to act tough but somehow she too fells weak, broken, helpless. While her life was going to be a roller coaster to be, she decided to date anyone before graduation. She convenience her two best friends Eleanor and Fabioula into her super plan for themselves but here’s the twist, one of her friend is gay another one is already dating but she doesn’t know about that along with that she had an unwanted guest in her house, her cousin Kamala who wants to complete her studies and not get married at that moment turns out she also has a secert boyfriend but Devi’s mother wanted her to get married a arranged marriage. It was forced on her cousin that she had to get married to a Indian boy who ever fits her parents criteria.

Devi is very competitive, A+ student with a rival Ben in her class from her middle school they’ve been competing among themselves that these two doesn’t stands each other. But what must be missing in her life is she never dated anyone she was so desperate to have a boyfriend, go on dates, have sex, going to parties, get drunk, and all those famous kids do list, but her desperation lead her to a lie route from where returning was impossible for her where she also have to loose her friends. Pexton her crush for more than 2 years, she got close to him meanwhile they decided to have sex, friends with benefits with no strings attached but things didn’t go her way.

Later thing she could possibly do was to accept that she was fallen apart by the terrific accident she had seen and her father had faced, she is a musician, her father died on the day for her concert before the concert started, her mother and she got into a fight which let her to think her mother didn’t care bout her and her father is the only person who cared about her, and when he got to know about the shifting back to India broke them apart more. She tried to convince herself that it was her father only who loves her and now when he is gone she don’t have anyone who loves her. She moved out from her house and she started staying at her rival Ben’s house.

It was her father’s birthday so her mother wanted them to bite her father goodbye all for good, she kept on denying for so long that she wasn’t sure that if she is ready or not earlier she thought her father was reborn as a Cayote and almost got killed by the wild animal.

But this time her friends, Ben helped her realized the fact that she had to grief to let her go and blocking the thoughts didn’t mean you don’t care enough even to say good bye

The whole story was about hypocrisy of Indian strict culture and modern thoughts clashing amongst themselves until you find your way out by being faithful, honest, and broken, sometimes it’s okay to fell broken.

“Your Dreams Are Mine Now”

By Srishti Bansal

For all the bibliophiles out there, Today I am going to review a super old book which was published in 2014. I recently ordered this book on Flipkart and after reading it, I thought this book is worth reviewing. The name of the book is “Your Dreams are Mine Now”, this book is a pure love story and is written by one of the most astounding writer Mr Ravinder Singh. He has many crowning achievements like “I too had a love story”, “Can love happen twice” , “Like it happened yesterday” , “Will you still love me?” etc. These are some phenomenal novels, where the characters revolve around the theme, that is Love. The novel Your Dreams are Mine Now is a powerful and poignant love story. It is a beautifully written teenage love story. Its a fictional story which draws insipiration from a real life incident Delhi’s Nirbhaya Rape Case that shook the whole nation to the core. This mishappening was a very inhumane and terrifying incident. Coming back to the story, the main characters of this book are Rupali Sinha and Arjun who recently took admission in Delhi University. They are totally poles apart and have come from totally different families. A scandal on campus brings them together and from here the love story begins. As you move on further the story becomes very depressing and the climax of the story is very heart rending. There are many beautiful parts in the novel like Rupali’s love confession and Arjun’s revert on it by simply yet passionately saying “Your dreams are mine now” which is the title of the book. The ending of the book is the most cruel part , which I feel should not be like this.

Overall the book is nice and worth the read. The language of the book is very explicit and lucid.

This novel got 3.7 rating out of 5 which is pretty good. Anyone who keens to read this book can easily buy it from Flipkart or Amazon.

Atlast I would like to extract one of my favourite qoute from this book :

“When dreams take shape, sleep runs away.”
