THAPPAD: What we Think
By Samyukta Narayanan
From ‘Thappad se darr nahi lagta sahab’ to ‘Bas ek thappad, lekin nahi maar sakta,’ Bollywood has grown up.
Thappad begins like every other rom com movie where Amrita (Tapsee pannu) and Vikram(Pavail Gulati) seem like the usual happy urban Indian couple where Amrita is the dutiful and chirpy housewife and Vikram the ambitious breadwinner.
The first 30 mins lull you into a false sense of comfort till one slap changes the dynamics of the whole movie. Vikram is angry about a failed promotion and Amrita ends up as the unfortunate punching bag as she is slapped in front of a crowd at a party. The movie questions the gender roles that exist in society and what is the worth of dignity. Is it necessary to be beaten up to lose dignity or is a slap enough to lose your self respect?
Anubhav Sinha, the director does a commendable job as he deals with the subject matter with subtlety and treads the fine line between melodrama and realism effortlessly.
Also to be applauded are the actors as each actor plays their part with conviction. Tapsee gives a nuanced performance as the chirpy housewife who finally wakes up to her invisible existence, Pavail Gulati does a fine job playing Vikram, who is not a demon but instead just an entitled young Indian man. Special mention to Kumud Mishra as the doting father who is heartbroken at the plight of his daughter.
Tapsee gives a career defining performance. Amrita is meek, dutiful and chirpy but the sudden shift in her demeanor doesn’t seem unbelievable. She gives off an aura of quiet confidence that is admirable.
One of the strongest points of the movie is that it is never preachy in its tone. The actions and emotions speak for themselves and the director trusts the audience to read between the lines. Emotions are always simmering but rarely reach a breaking point.
Sinha constructs a believable and relatable universe which makes the audience more invested in how things unfurl, mostly because we can feel the familiarity of these situations.
We have all had that house help who complains about domestic violence nonchalantly or worse still, we have experienced it in our own households.
However the movie isn’t without its flaws as it drags a little too much in the second half. But it’s worth it for the heart-wrenching climax that is surely going to result in a few moist eyes in the hall.
I strongly recommend catching this movie in theaters near you. A tight screenplay, strong performances and a powerful theme make this movie a must watch in our opinion.
CERAGEM THERAPY
By Muskan Mehndiratta
A therapy or medical treatment is the attempted remediation of the health problem, usually following a diagnosis. As a rule each therapy has indications and contraindications. There are many different types of therapy. Not all therapies are effective. The one which I’m going to discuss is CERAGEM therapy.
What is Ceragem therapy?
Ceragem therapy is a fully natural therapy that scans the back of the spine and the machine provides thermal acupressure to the spine.
People use Ceragem Therapy to increase blood pressure, purifying the blood, boost immunity, relieve stress and aligning spinal cord. Ceragem therapy relieves arthritis pains, relaxes muscles and increases energy with proper blood circulation.
Three things that matter in life ‐ your health, your missions, and the people you love.

Ceragem is safe. However, in every treatment chances of side effects exist. In case of ceragem chances of side effect are extremely low if used properly, it shouldn’t be used regularly. Side effects may occur due to infared light which may cause damage to the skin.
On the other hand it’s too costly. So, instead of purchasing it you can go to centers where Ceragem Therapy is given.

NIKHIL BAGS GOLD IN KHELO INDIA UNIVERSITY GAMES
By Rahul Baghel
Nikhil Saini is 19 years old and the current youngest champion in under-21 boys category. Belonging to Patiala (Punjab), Nikhil is now the best class level champion in making India proud of his achievements. He started table tennis in 2010. He has 4 national medals, won Gold medal in All India University Games and recently he won Gold Medal in Khelo India University Games.
Nikhil’s father, Vijay Kumar Saini, works for the Municipal Corporation and his mother, Rajni Saini, homemaker, can proudly say that their son is the current champion in Table Tennis under-21 category. He trains at Elite Table Tennis Academy in Patiala under coach Varinder Kumar Gulati.
Gyann Loaded team interacted with Nikhil to have an insight in his life and this is how it went.
How has your game changed over the years?
There has been a lot of change. The sport of table tennis itself has had a lot of change. There were faster bats earlier and the balls were faster. Earlier there used to be only forehand players. Now you need to play both forehand and backhand. I have to be updated with the new techniques and keep my game in line with the new age. I think, especially, between 2010 to 2012, I had a big transition problem to get updated with the new system.
Do you change your mental strategies according to a specific player?
Yes very much. Because everybody is different. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. So I cannot have the same strategy. I might have some strategies which are the same but those will be my strategies. What I want to do with my game is that I need to play my forehand. I need to go hard on my forehand, which is my game. This goes on with everybody else. But it will change according to player on how I build up to get to that forehand or where exactly do I want to place the ball. So those kind of things are always variable.
Do you have memories of anything of that sort happening?
In the National Championship final, I played Vikrant Kumar. Normally his backhand is stronger than mine, that is where he takes me down. But I started to challenge him with my backhand. He didn’t know where to play and I won the match. By the time he could realize what he could do more, I was just giving more and more pressure. Even though the backhand wasn’t my strongest point, I still believed that this was the only way I could beat him because the other way around, he would beat me. His probability of beating me was more. So this was my only chance and that was what I took.

What goes through your mind when you have just lost a point?
It depends. There are so many emotions, there are so many thoughts that go through your mind during a match. It depends on when you have lost the point. What happened before. What happened after. But the best thing would be if you are in the zone. No thoughts. You lose a point, you win a point, you are there playing the next point. I try not to be negative, at least from my body language so that the opponent doesn’t get too easily confident.
How much of the advantage your height gives you?
It’s both ways. Because being tall near the table, I need to bend a lot. And I feel cramped. Claustrophobic. So I need to always take a distance. I need to take space, but at the same time, the ball doesn’t go out of my reach as I am tall and the table is small. So it’s both of an advantage and disadvantage.
When the coach gives you instructions, how much of the information do you go on to implement?
You need to try to do it 100 percent if you trust the coach. It’s always better to have someone in that corner who you trust than someone you don’t and then you play along.
Heart says, ‘No exam.’
By Muskan Mehndiratta
How very little can be done under the spirit of fear. It’s quite obvious to any student to get stressed or anxious when he/she is going to appear for a board exam, be it of CBSE, UP board or any other state board.
In fact the class 10th students, for whom the board exam comes as the first major challenge in life, are more afraid of taking the big exam. But, dear students, there’s nothing so extraordinary about the board exam as it is similar to any other regular exam that you have appeared in earlier.
You will be given a blend of easy and complex questions to answer, the same as in other exams. The only difference is that, this time these questions will not be prepared by your school teachers and the answers will be checked by the external examiners selected by the board.
You feel stressed and anxious about the board exams. Actually, the whole game is played by your brain which tries to exaggerate the things in tough situations. All you need is to control your brain and keep it healthy and calm.
Here are few tips on how you can train your brain to stay fearless and work properly during the exam days:
- Eat good and frequent meals.
- Sleep well and at fixed times.
- Exercise your brain for peace.
- Make an orgainsed study schedule.
- Reward yourself with positive thoughts.
- Take small, frequent study breaks.
Studying for long hours can make your mind and body stressed and fatigued which ultimately infuses fearful thoughts into your brain. Your brain will not be able to grasp any more information and this will add to your exam phobia. So, break out your study schedule to break the monotony and do some mind refreshing and recreational activities like singing, dancing, watching your favourite Tv series, chatting with your friends, playing games, having snacks, etc. this way your mind will get refreshed and recharged, and becomes ready to absorb in more stuff.
So, guys, don’t consider the board exams as a burden or anything to disturb your life in a negative way. Take the challenge bravely and let your result reflect your hard work.

CAN MULTIPLEXES IN TRICITY BE OPEN 24 HOURS?
By Saakshi Sharma
If you are an avid news reader, you surely would know about the Maharashtra’s government decision to keep Mumbai city open 24*7. The shopping malls, multiplexes, bars; in short Mumbai is set to experience the life that’ll never stop.
“If we have to make Mumbai an international city, then we need to give them more facilities,” said tourism and environment minister Aaditya Thackeray to The Economic Times, who’d floated the idea some years ago. “Putting Mumbai under a curfew is not good. We have tourists, we have people who work late in the night and we are trying to give them more facilities.”
The decision is a welcome move and will boost the state’s economy. Also it is great for late night commuters, night-shift workers and those who like to wander at odd hours.
The proposal cleared by the cabinet on January 22 states that the first phase of this project will come into effect from January 27, 2020, with no relaxation in excise rules.
Clearing the proposal is one thing but how feasible this is, is another.
We talked to the multiplex owners of the Tricity to know their opinion on this initiative and what they feel about the proposal, following feedbacks were received.
According to Pankaj, duty manager at PVR, Cosmo Plaza (Zirakpur), keeping multiplexes open 24 hours is not really a great idea. The profit depends entirely on the movie and we do not get blockbusters every week. Movies like Baahubali can still be preferred for the 24 hour proposal but not movies that hardly flourish for two weeks. Also it might affect the business as more staff will be required.
It might be a really good option for a city like Mumbai or maybe Delhi too, but when it comes to smaller cities like Mohali and Panchkula, it is not so feasible. The requirement of more staff, late night transportation can still be managed but the bigger question will be about profits.
There’s no point in implementing a scheme that would bring more loss than profit.
CITY BEAUTIFUL LOSING THE TITLE
By Saakshi Sharma
Chandigarh is losing its ‘City Beautiful’ status because of the decreasing green cover in the area. It has been noticed that hundreds of full-grown trees growing along various roads of Chandigarh and the parking areas are dying or have started to wither due to the reason that the area underneath these trees have either tar or are paved with interlocking bricks.

Dr.Harjit Singh Dhillon, horticulturist and ex executive engineer (horticulture), Chandigarh Administration, said, “Trees are dying. Our responsibility does not end by simply planting a sapling, but we need to care for it. Chandigarh is a beautiful city, the negligence towards trees while construction of buildings and roads needs to stop.”
A single tree provides cooling of 10 air conditioners. It not only provides oxygen and shade but is also home to birds and many living organisms. A tree is a future investment for the coming generations, he said.
THE PROBLEM:
The condition of trees is miserable these days. He mentioned that there is a special team of 10-15 doctors in China that are specifically recruited in divided areas where they care for the green cover belt.

The construction of multi-level basement parking in malls has declined the water level. Now the roots of trees are unable to get water for photosynthesis and are slowly withering away.
- It has been noticed that hundreds of full grown trees growing along various roads of Chandigarh and the parking areas are dying or have been start wilting due to the reasons that the area underneath these trees have either tarcol or paved with interlocking bricks.
- With the results the rain water as well as the portable water by tankers is not liable to approach to their feeding roots.
- The second reason of declining of these trees is the aeration of the feeding roots block its respiration and ultimately the plant roots died and so as the trees.
- The third reason is the subsoil water is going down beyond the reach of trees tap root due to continuous de-watering of multi level basements of malls and sky touching buildings.
Having contributed more than 40 years to plant trees in the area, Dr.Harjit Singh says he is deeply pained after seeing present status of trees due to human negligence.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?
Dr.Harjit Singh feels that the government should take the initiative to save trees, that would in turn save the ‘City Beautiful’ title. There must be strict laws and guidelines dealing with architectural planning and landscaping of the city that prevent cutting of trees. There is a need for a separate Horticulture department in Municipal Corporation that has experts from horticulture background.
A survey of dry trees of tricity maybe conducted to replace dead trees with new saplings of 6-7 ft height. The sapling is to be protected with strong tree guards with a basin dug with help of JCB of minimum six feet diameter. It needs to be done to avoid the ugly look and to overcome the lost green cover. The health department should be given punishable instructions not to allow burning of dried leaves under these trees. The administration of tricity should ensure that no tree in future should die due to the said reasons.
- The only solution to save these trees to make at least six feet basins with their level below the surrounding concrete / pavers so that the rain water or tanker water rush to their stem for their survival.
- No raged pakka platform should be made around the tree trunks. The health department should be given punishable instructions not to allow burning of dried leaves under these trees.
The undue cutting of green trees for construction work, widening roads in the name of flyovers maybe given due consultation and multiple thoughts before loss of green avenue for which Tricity is famous.
